All the major in marketing students are participate in the Living and Working on the Web module. We are required to get to know the idea of digital visitors and digital residents, and writing down our own understanding supported by self online experiences. After reading my peers posts, I have gained a deeper understanding of web users’ behaviour.
Initially, I thought “digital visitors” and “digital residents” are just different by their attitudes towards to the Internet. People should aware of the line between online and offline social activities, and the different level of information sharing safety issues. However, after I go through other people’s blog, I realize that there are many aspects should be concern about.
From Winnie’s blog, I get to know the time spend online whether contribute to the person is a visitor or resident. Sometimes, a visitor can spend more time than residents. Subsequently, there is a trend that young people are more familiar with social media than baby boomers. But you can’t associate age with visitors or residents on how much they engaged with Internet. Novina’s post helps me understand that social platform are designed base on social purpose. And the natural of residence leads user to perform the certain way. So, maybe there one web user can be a visitor and a resident at same time under different scenarios.
There are some privacy and security issues like residents may be over exposure, and visitors will spot them. Being more thoughtful than just use skype, twitter because it is free.
Ultimately, despite we are solving the same question, there are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people’s eyes. Technology is growing very fast, and it is convenience and powerful, laws and regulations will catch up. David’s model helps us mapping the different web users, in reality, visitors and residents all get benefit from Internet. [words 310]
