Open access is an progress as the advancement of technology. Before I have a look of my classmates’ posts, I think open access is something sounds nice but probably can not sustainable in the long run. Just like the development of social media, the culture needs to exposure and flow. The ways of distributing knowledge is cheaper than old times, no matter use Skype, reading news online instead of newspaper, or get a pdf copy instead of printed copy etc. The disadvantages about open access are majorly relate to quality and fees. Some other concerns like content provider may wish their work been correctly judged and won’t be misused by other people. I found some suggestions like different kind of copyrights and creative commons, these models could effectively protect writers and other people reuse it.
I visited Evan’s blog, he mentioned some advantages of OA, like helping more people building more innovate ideas. On the other side, about the fees needed to run the whole platform for sharing still need taxpayer support and sponsers. OA may cause some issues if everyone can access it, maybe ethical and copyright issues like am I allow to use it.
And I visited Yu Ting’s blog, she mentioned an idea the OERs may have a lot of limits. There are many fields of studies can not complete using OERs, and I do agree with OER is a big step forward, especially for the people can not access the information. Learning is lifelong journey, the certificates under OERs remain questionable.
In conclusion, open access good for academic students and researchers. If there something like login created for sharing site, limited people can access to it. As for many magazines, online subscription still cheaper than papers. Completely open will lead to advertisements and other business models, but we need more regulations to run it well. [words 319]
